AMPURIES: GREEK AND ROMAN COLONY

Ampuries ruins are a very ancient settlement by the Mediterranean, in the Costa Brava, next to l'Escala a lovely fisherman village  and very near of the Pyrenees, the Catalan natural border with France.

During the VI century B.C.  greek people arrived to Ampuries and founded a colony, Emporion. During the second Punic War, at the beginning of the III century B.C., the roman militars came into Spain by Emporio, and  and they started the romanization of the Iberian Peninsula. In the II century B.C. they founded Emporiae at the north side of the greek colony.

In 1908 the archaeological reseach was started until today, there are still 75% of the settlement pending of excavation, and Ampuries is part of the Archaelogical Museum of Catalonia.

THE GÜELL COLONY

La Colònia Güell is a textil industrial colony founded in 1890 by Eusebi Güell and developped by Antoni Gaudí and other modernist architects.
During the Industrial Revolution there were a lot of industrial colonies all over Catalonia, the social conflicts in Barcelona, the control of the industrial owner over the workers and the production process were important reasons for the success of this way of industrialization.
Mr. Güell was a very educated and progressive person, he traveled all over the world, and he lived some years in England, he was in contact with the English industrial colonies. He relocated his textil factory from Barcelona center to Santa Coloma de Cervelló, by the suburs. He wanted to give the best conditions to his workers and  they get all the needs covered into the colony. The Güell Colony was quite privileged if we compare it with other industrial colonies around Catalonia.

CARRER AMPLE

THE RAMBLAS

The Ramblas is the most popular street in Barcelona, it cuts the Old Town from Catalonia Square to Columbus Memorial Monument, it is also the link between the old port and the modern city. Rambla means in arab language torrent of water, and until the XVIIIth C there was a water torrent coming from Collserola. This pedestrian avenue is always full of people, day and night, nad it became one of the symbols of the city.
Next to Catalonia Square is shopping area, you are going to find all kind of shops, by the Columbus Monument you can visit the marina of  Barcelona, the Maritim Museum inside the Medieval Yardship or stroll in the old port over an small boat called Golondrinas. In the middle of the Ramblas you can visit the Mercat de la Boqueria, a traditional food market also one of the highlights in Barcelona.

THE HOLLY FAMILY: GAUDI'S DREAM WILL BECOME REALITY SOON

The "Sagrada Familia" is the Antoni Gaudi's unfinished master piece. It is an expiatory temple, that means that the church can only be built with the donations of the people. That is the reason why Sagrada Familia is also known as The Churh of the Poors.
The Association of Devots of Saint Joseph started the Holly Family project in 1882, and Gaudi was in charge after 1883. There has been different rythmes in the process of construction of the Temple, in 1897 there was a very important donation and Gaudí went on with his own project,  during the XX century the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) stopped the works for nearly 20 years. After 1950's they followed the construction, and today the Holly Family is the most visited monument in Barcelona.

Detail of Saint Peter in the Passion Facade by Josep Maria Subirats

Nowadays there are two important facts that determinate the present of the construcion of the Sagrada Familia:
  1. Some weeks ago the Pope confirmed his visit to the Sagrada Familia the 7th November 2010, to bless the central nave of the Temple.
  2. The 26th March 2010 they started the works for built a tunnel for the fast train, a few centimetres in front of the main facade of the Sagrada Familia. The people in charge of the Sagrada Familia construction are very worried beause the vibrations of the works and the trains can affect the structure of the Temple.
So we are now in a very important moment in the process of construction, we will see what is going on...
